About This Release

The Santos de Cartier Medium "Ghost" is a 2026 steel Santos with a grey dial that has no numerals or indices, revisiting the 1980s Santos Carrée ref. 2960 "Ghost" dials. It measures 41.9 x 35.1 mm and 8.83 mm thick, runs on the automatic Calibre 1847 MC, and arrives in boutiques in November 2026 at about $8,400.

Collector Note

What is the Cartier Santos "Ghost"? It is a medium-size, stainless-steel Santos de Cartier with a grey dial and no hour markers, introduced quietly at Watches & Wonders 2026 with no press release. The name comes from the 1980s Santos Carrée ref. 2960, whose low-contrast grey dials made the Cartier text seem to fade in and out as the light changed. Collectors gave those dials the "Ghost" nickname, and vintage examples now regularly sell above the price of a new Santos. Why does it matter? The new version keeps that tonal effect. It takes the Santos's most recognizable feature, the Roman numerals, off the dial and leaves only the square case, the exposed screws and the brushed-and-polished finishing. Without the numerals, the Santos reads more as a design object than a dress watch. That makes the Ghost one of the most versatile Santos references for daily wear. How does it compare? It shares its case, movement and pricing with the standard steel Santos Medium. That means a 41.9 x 35.1 mm case, 8.83 mm thickness, the automatic Calibre 1847 MC and 100 m water resistance. The only difference is the dial, and the dial is the reason to buy it. When is it available? Cartier boutiques worldwide from November 2026. Expected US retail is about $8,400, or €6,900 in Europe.

Collector Value

In-production steel Santos references usually trade below retail on the secondary market, but dial variants are the exception. Vintage ref. 2960 "Ghost" dials sell for roughly $15,000–$18,000, well above the new Ghost's retail price. Supply is expected to be limited at launch and demand from enthusiasts is high, so expect waitlists and a near-retail or premium resale price in the short term. Over the long term, it should hold value better than the standard Roman-numeral Santos Medium.
