About This Release

The G-Shock MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is the first G-Shock built with a shock-resistant blue sapphire crystal case, released in 2026 for the 30th anniversary of Casio's MR-G line. Limited to 20 pieces worldwide at $80,000, it is the most expensive production G-Shock ever offered — over 100 times the price of a typical G-Shock.

Collector Note

The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is the culmination of Casio's "Blue Rose Project" — a name taken from the idea of achieving something once thought impossible. Casio first showed a sapphire G-Shock concept in 2018 but couldn't make it pass the brand's shock-resistance standards. Sapphire is extremely hard but brittle, and screw holes create the stress points where cracks begin. The solution was the MR-G Multi-Guard Structure: a bezel and case built from multiple separate, hand-finished blue sapphire components that interlock around a black DLC-coated Grade 5 titanium core, with no screws at all. Casio says the design was inspired by kigumi, the traditional Japanese timber-joinery technique that uses interlocking joints instead of nails. The sapphire itself is grown as ingots over several months, and only the sections with ideal color and clarity are used. Design details reward close inspection: the MR-G logo, "SHOCK RESIST" and other dial lettering are pure 24-karat gold, the stainless-steel brick pattern honors the original 1983 G-Shock, and the Grade 5 titanium screw caseback carries another blue sapphire insert engraved with the individual number (1/20 to 20/20). A Gallium Tough Solar module with Multi-Band 6 radio timekeeping keeps it accurate, while 200m water resistance keeps it a true G-Shock. It also continues Casio's "Dream Project" lineage: the 2019 G-D5000, a solid 18k gold square G-Shock limited to 35 pieces at $70,000, and the one-of-one G-D001 that sold at Phillips in 2023 for $400,050.

Collector Value

Why does a G-Shock cost $80,000? Most G-Shock watches sell for under $100 to around $500, and even the premium full-metal GMW-B5000 line typically stays under $1,000 — G-Shock built its reputation on affordable, indestructible watches for everyday Casio fans. The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is a deliberate break from that market. At $80,000 it is aimed at serious luxury collectors, not the traditional G-Shock buyer, and it costs more than many Rolex, Omega and Grand Seiko models. The price reflects three things: the difficulty of machining shock-resistant parts from blue sapphire (an eight-year engineering effort), the 24-karat gold and Grade 5 titanium materials, and extreme rarity — only 20 pieces exist, with six for the entire US market. Casio's previous ultra-luxury G-Shocks show there is real collector demand at this level: the solid-gold G-D5000 sold for $70,000 in 2019, and the one-of-one G-D001 reached $400,050 at Phillips in 2023. For the rest of the Blue Rose story, Casio offers two more accessible versions: the 500-piece MRG-B5000SA at $6,600 and the GMW-B5000SB at $770.
